Year 2

Autumn term

Over the first half term, English involved learning about healthy eating.  The children used the story ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ to carry out work which included sequencing events and understanding how to write short captions for the story.  The children also created some amazing projects about healthy eating, which they presented to the rest of the class.

During the second half term, we used the story ‘Stick Man’ by Julia Donaldson to discuss characters and settings within a story.  The children used this book to retell the story in five sentences, understand how to use conjunctions in their writing and to learn the skill of using speech within writing.  The children loved using this fun story as a way of learning new skills within their English work.

On Thursday 8th November 2018, the year 1 and 2 children were very excited to go on a school trip.  We travelled by coach to The Radstone Primary School, our newest member of the multi academy trust, for a dinosaur workshop.  During the visit, the children took part in many exciting activities including dinosaur biscuit decorating, hand-printing, mask-making and fossil excavating.  They were also lucky enough to meet a big T Rex called Jack and a baby T Rex called Millie.  The children were very excited and brave!  They used their experiences to write a recount of their exciting day.

In our History lessons during the first half term, the children learnt about the life and work of Florence Nightingale.  The children thoroughly enjoyed a visit by Florence Nightingale, who came to the school and provided us with lots of information about her life.  She brought in objects that we could look at, activities that the children completed and she was dressed in the clothes that she would have worn during her time as a nurse during the Crimean War (1853-56), when she fundamentally changed the role of nursing in hospitals!  We learnt so many interesting facts about Florence Nightingale and the children produced some amazing work. This work is displayed within our classrooms and the children are very proud of their achievements.

During the second half term, our topic in History was 'The History of the Shoe Industry in Northamptonshire'.  The children learnt all about child labour during the Victorian times and were amazed to learn that children as young as six and seven used to work instead of going to school!  We also had a visit from two ladies from ‘Zap n Toes’, a shoe shop in Towcester, who gave the children so many fascinating facts about our feet including how much our feet sweat a week – yuck!  The children loved the activities and learnt so much about how and where shoes are made, how they are transported to shops and how to keep their feet healthy.  Following this visit the children were able to write detailed and interesting recounts about this educational visit.

During the Autumn term in Science the children have learnt about everyday materials, including the importance of recycling and understanding how the shape of some materials can change.  They have learnt scientific terminology and have learnt how to record observations both in and around the school.

The children have enjoyed their weekly swimming lessons and are growing in confidence and ability in the pool.  They have quickly become very responsible and independent!

Christmas production

At the end of the Autumn term, the Year Two children worked extremely hard to learn lines, songs and actions for our KS1 Christmas production and they put on a fabulous show.  We were all very proud of them.  Well done all!
